Foreword
Twenty Years of Publications
This issue of Research Profile is about change. The magazine itself has undergone many changes in the nearly 20 years it has been published, evolving from a one-page brochure to a 36-page, professionally produced magazine. And after nearly seven years as editor and writer at Research Profile, Anne Siegel left the magazine in March to join Midwest Express Airlines' corporate communications department.
UWM Graduate School and Research Dean George Kuelks, whose departure at the end of August earns him some extra space in this issue, reflects on the evolution of the Graduate School since UWM's inception in 1956, growing from an extension of UW-Madison to a prestigious, nationally recognized research center. He alsoexpresses his visions for the university's future in this issue's Dean's Comments.
Ihab Hassan, UWM Vilas Research Professor of English and Comparative Literature, discusses changes in "cultural fashions," literature and humanities education, and his 45-year career.
Stereotypical views of Italian women during Fascism are changing thanks to Robin Pickering-Iazzi's research of women's literature in that country from the 1920s and '30s.
And the ever-changing world of global economics and exchange rates is constantly monitored by UWM economist Moshen Bahmani-Oskooee.
