Research in the Humanities Award

2007 Awardee

John Koethe
Philosophy

The biannual Research in the Humanities Award recognizes a publication that serves as testimony to the author's comprehensive grasp of the subject(s) of inquiry and research and, in turn, outstanding scholarship. The faculty member will have demonstrated outstanding research in the Humanities and will have made substantive contributions to humanistic thought through a monograph or other scholarly work published during the two years prior to the award year.

In each odd-numbered year, the Graduate School solicits nominations of Humanities faculty members in the Departments of Africology, Art History, Comparative Literature, English, Ethnic Studies, Foreign Languages and Linguistics, History, Philosophy, and Spanish and Portuguese for the award.

Eligibility and Selection

  • Faculty members in the Departments of Africology, Art History, Comparative Literature, English, Ethnic Studies, Foreign Languages and Linguistics, History, Philosophy, and Spanish and Portuguese.
  • Author of monograph published during the two years prior to the award year.

The Dean of the Graduate School, the Chair of the Divisional Committee of the Arts and Humanities, and the Associate Dean of Humanities in L&S will comprise the Selection Committee. The faculty member selected for the Research in the Humanities Award will be honored at the Fall Awards Ceremony and receive $1,500 from an account at the UWM Foundation established for this award by former Graduate School Associate Dean for Research Robert A. Jones and his spouse, Mary B. Jones.

Nomination Procedure

Calls for nomination are generally issued in March of each award year, with a late April deadline. For more information, send e-mail to vle@uwm.edu or call 414-229-5483.
