2008 NEH Summer Stipends Competition

Submissions are due at noon on Friday, September 5, 2008.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) has announced the 2008 Summer Stipends competition. The deadline for receipt of nominations from UWM to NEH is October 1, 2008. UWM may submit two (2) nominees. Faculty or teaching academic staff holding probationary, indefinite, or rolling horizon appointments are eligible to apply through the campus submission process. Non-teaching academic staff or teaching academic staff with annual appointments are eligible and apply directly to NEH.

Persons who have held a major fellowship or research grant or its equivalent within the last three (3) academic years are ineligible. Recipients of a NEH Summer Stipend in 2004 to the present are ineligible. See the program instructions for more information. Individuals may apply for the NEH Summer Stipend, Fellowship, Faculty Research Award, Fellowship at Digital Humanities Centers, or Teaching Development Fellowships, but they may hold only one award in any given government fiscal year or calendar year Application forms and instructions are also available at the NEH Web site. Applicants are encouraged to read the Summer Stipends guidelines, examine the Grants.gov Web site, and download the forms for the preliminary submission.

Applicants should submit seven (7) copies of their proposals to Cyndie Chow in Research Initiatives by noon on Friday, September 5, 2008. All proposal applications will be reviewed on campus by a panel of former NEH Summer Stipend recipients in order to select the two (2) UWM nominees. Because of the October 1 deadline, all applications must be received in Research Initiatives and Development Services, Mitchell 251, by noon on Friday, September 5, 2008. Please encourage our colleagues to apply.

The seven (seven) copies of the application set should include the following items listed in the Summer Stipends Web site guidelines:

  1. The contents of what will become the NEH application cover sheet without the field of expertise.
  2. A resume, in outline form [maximum two pages single spaced].
  3. A detailed description of the proposed study [maximum six double-spaced pages (11 pt., one-inch margins, collated and consecutively numbered)].
  4. Appendix: for edition, translation, database projects or for proposals that include visual materials: a single-page (1) sample of the original text for editions or translations for which the stipend is to be used [one (1) page original text, a single one (1) page of the edited or translated version]; for a database project [a single-page(1) sample entry]; for visual materials [a single (1) page in pdf format].
  5. A bibliography for the project [maximum one (1) page].
  6. A separate page with the name, title, department, and institution of two (2) individuals who will be writing reference letters if selected for the final submission.

If selected by the campus panel the applicant will submit the final proposal through following the electronic submission instructions on the NEH Web site using Grants.gov by the October 1 deadline and provide reference letters online to NEH by October 19, 2008.
