Program Description

  • Open to faculty and academic staff.
  • Transforms extramural proposal development for participants.
  • Provides opportunities to all faculty and academic staff across all schools and colleges.
  • Designed for participants who have had some exposure to writing grant applications, either through training, mentoring, or personal experience.
  • Emphasizes idea development, identification of the most appropriate granting agency, how to write for reviewers, and tips and strategies that are of proven value in presenting an applicant's case to reviewers.
  • Phase 1 includes a seminar and the opportunity to submit a pre-proposal for review.
  • Phase 2: includes selection of the 15-22 Graduate School Research Fellows by the consultants with relevant Dean/Associate Dean/Director approval.
  • Phase 2 participants continue to revise pre-proposals and write drafts of proposal applications, guided by a proposal writing handbook. Fellows create final technical proposals based on consultant feedback through the process for submission to agencies.
  • Phase 2 participants' deliverable requirement: a major federal or non-federal grant proposal submission in their discipline.
  • The Graduate School supports all costs of Phase 1; schools and colleges match costs of participants in Phase 2.

The goal is to provide key opportunities that transform the success of 15-22 faculty and researchers who participate in both Phase 1 and Phase 2 of an intensive proposal writing program. The Graduate School Research Fellows program is a nine-month commitment by the participants, consultants, and Graduate School staff. Phases 1 and 2 of the Workshop Program emphasize the application of fundamentals and principles, as well as practical tips and strategies that make the difference between success and failure in extramural proposal creation, submission, and funding.
